// _LEARNING_CENTER: OFF-PAGE_SEO FOR TRADESMEN
// A QUICK NOTE FROM ME
There are agencies out there who genuinely care about your business. They do good work, charge fairly, and deliver results. But in my experience, they're buried under thousands of others selling snake oil wrapped in "just six more months" promises and monthly retainers.
This guide isn't about those good agencies. It's about the ones charging $1k/mo for work you can do yourself in a weekend. If you're working with one? Read carefully. Ten minutes will save you thousands.
By the way if you landed here from outside my website, you probably don't know who I am. I'm Matthew Williams — a no-nonsense web designer who grew up in a blue collar family and has been tinkering with websites since the 90s. I took my experience, combined it with a college education (History degree + Web Design, Welding, and Electrical Engineering coursework), and decided to go all-in on web design as a career. ✓ IF WE WORK TOGETHER JUST KNOW I ALREADY HANDLE THIS (and the website design, development, managed hosting, etc.) BUT THIS PAGE IS ABOUT SEO. sO BACK TO IT.
On-Page SEO (Content & Structure):
- Keyword-rich content writing that AI and Organic SEO loves
- Strategic service pages that actually matter
- Location pages for each city you serve
- Title tags & meta descriptions that drive clicks
- Header hierarchy (H1 → H2 → H3)
- Internal linking between your services
Technical SEO (The Foundation):
- Sub-3s LCP (non-negotiable for ranking - many agencies ignore this foundation)
- Semantic HTML5 (Google understands you)
- Schema markup (rich results)
- Mobile-first architecture
- Ongoing technical updates (yes, things change)
- Google Search Console management
This and more is all included in your $349/mo. No upsells. No "SEO packages." Just the digital foundation that actually works. Website, Managed Hosting, SEO, and more.
⚠️ SEO IS USELESS WITHOUT A PROPER WEBSITE
Ok maybe not completely useless. But it's like putting e85 racing fuel into a truck that doesn't have an engine because you think it keeps the body from rusting. It makes zero sense. If your site is slow or bloated — common issues with websites built on page builders — off-page SEO is just directing leads to a broken website and very likely increasing your ad costs (PPC). Hand-crafted websites by a skilled professional web designer are simply better for performance, security, and SEO. →
You only need 8 citations.
DEFINITION: A citation is simply a submission on a website that behaves like a phone book. Name, Address, Phone Number, etc.
Many agencies will sell you on "100+ citations." I'm telling you: 8 gets you 90% of the benefit. The rest is diminishing returns and checkbox-ticking.
Most important. Period.
10% of search = 10% of leads you're ignoring
iPhone users never touch Google Maps
Tradesmen get calls from here, like it or not
Free, easy, older homeowners use it
Neighbors recommend neighbors. Goldmine.
Trust signal. Grandparents check here.
Even the free listing sends traffic
The Golden Rule:
Your NAP (Name, Address, Phone) must be EXACTLY the same. Everywhere. Same format. Same spelling. Same "LLC" or no "LLC." Consistency signals trust to Google. Inconsistency tanks your local rankings.
Time investment: This is the most mundane part. But maybe an hour or two on a Sunday afternoon.
🔧 WHAT I DON'T DO: I never touch your citations. I don't need to check if your phone number is spelled right. That's like me asking you to check if my email address has a typo — it's trivial. You can do this yourself. It's easier than setting up a Facebook account.
02 // _GBP > SOCIAL MEDIA
The upsell snake oil you likely fell for. (Don't worry — many tradesmen do.)
GBP (Google Business Profile)
- ✓ Shows directly in Google Search — impacts ranking
- ✓ Click-to-call button — drives phone calls instantly
- ✓ One-tap navigation — shows maps directions
- ✓ Customer intent: HIGH (searching now)
- ✓ Time investment: 10 min/week
Social Media
- ✗ Shows in Google Search? Zero SEO value
- ✗ Phone calls? Maybe, buried in bio
- ✗ Directions? Can't compete with maps
- ✗ Customer intent: LOW (scrolling mindlessly)
- ✗ Time investment: 10+ hours/week
🏆 THE VERDICT
GBP wins. Every time. By a landslide.
What actually matters on GBP (Weekly Checklist):
- ☐ Respond to all new reviews (even 5-star ones)
- ☐ Add 2-3 new photos (job site photos work better than studio shots)
- ☐ Update services if needed (e.g., "now offering gutter cleaning")
- ☐ Post 1 update (e.g., seasonal: "Spring gutter cleaning available now")
The Secret Sauce: Keywords in Review Responses
Most business owners reply like this:
Here's what Google actually wants to read:
Do you see what I included? Mentioned location (Knoxville), service (roof repair), material (asphalt shingle), cross-sold another service (gutter cleaning). Google reads this as a real, active, local business. Most businesses ignore this. That's your advantage.
Real backlinks come from community.
Many agencies can't build real backlinks for you because they don't live in your town. The "100 backlinks per month" promises are often filled with:
- ✗ Abandoned blog comments (nofollow, ignored by Google)
- ✗ Foreign directory spam (looks like a paid link farm)
- ✗ "Web 2.0" properties (Google ignores these)
- ✗ Link farms that will eventually get you penalized
Here's what actually works (and only you can do it better):
The bottom line:
You don't need 100 backlinks. You need 10 real ones from your actual community. Nobody in another city can build these for you as well as you. This is your advantage. Use it.
04 // _SEO_AGENCY_RED_FLAGS
🚩 RED FLAG #1
Minimizing the impact of LCP and Core Web Vitals.
Google uses Core Web Vitals (including LCP) as a confirmed ranking factor. In competitive niches, these metrics often serve as the decisive tie-breaker that allows you to outrank rivals.
Beyond SEO, poor performance directly hurts your bottom line: slow landing pages inflate PPC costs through lower Quality Scores and trigger massive bounce rates—on mobile, 53% of users will abandon a page if it takes longer than 3 seconds to load. If an agency tells you they "don't matter much" or "are overhyped," it's because they can't or won't fix them.
Google has been explicit about their importance for many years.
🚩 RED FLAG #2
Promising "thousands of backlinks" or "guaranteed #1 rankings."
Nobody can guarantee rankings. Not even me. And "thousands of backlinks" is a lie — those links will be spammy directories and comment sections that will eventually get you penalized by Google.
🚩 RED FLAG #3
Promising "guaranteed sales" or "specific number of leads."
An agency can guarantee work. They cannot results. Anyone who promises X number of leads per month is lying or doesn't understand how search works.
🚩 RED FLAG #4
Locking you into a 6-12 month contract for "SEO retainer."
If they can't prove value month-to-month, why are they afraid of you canceling? Good work doesn't need a hostage agreement.
🚩 RED FLAG #5
Selling "proprietary systems" that are actually public information.
Some agencies will claim they have a "secret algorithm" or "proprietary citation network" or "exclusive backlink database." It's snake oil. These are just fancy names for things Google publishes for free — or basic tools anyone can access.
If they can't explain what they actually do in plain English, they're hiding something. Real SEO isn't a secret. It's work.
🚩 RED FLAG #6
White labeling & middle men — You're paying for a handshake.
Many SEO agencies don't do any actual work. They outsource everything to a white-label provider in another country, slap their logo on the report, and mark up the price 300-500%. You're not paying for expertise. You're paying for a middle man who fills out a form and forwards an email.
The test: Ask them "Do you do the work in-house or do you white label?" If they hesitate or get defensive, you have your answer.
The test: Ask any agency these questions. Their answers will tell you everything.
